The Critical Zone Pedology Laboratory at UKY began its Fragipan Project to characterize W. KY's Fragipans in 2019.
Fragipans are extremely dense soil features that occur less than 100 cm from soil surface. Because of this they restrict downward movement of water and plant root penetration resulting in stunted plant roots and decreasing crop yields.
Soil samples were collected from sites demonstrating fragic properties in an effort to better describe the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics of fragipans. Hover over markers to learn more about individual sites!
Map data obtained from Critical Zone Pedology Lab, USDA NRCS Soils Series Descriptions , U.S. Census Bureau's Cartographic Boundary Files (State) & TIGER/Line Shapefiles (county)
